The series Shifting Sands Ceramics, 2024, is intended to be an engaging way of recording family photos, memories, past times and experiences revolving around our bach at Matapouri, Northland. Using the familiar visual language of blue and white porcelain from around the world, such as the distinctive designs of the 14th century Yan dynasty. Harrington has endeavoured to elevate and archive the humble bach and the unique provincial landscape and culture of Aotearoa. She is drawn to the enduring qualities pertaining uniquely to ceramics as a medium, even if fragmented. Metamorphosed through fire, the fragility of paper photos are recast into a more durable substance that remains, and perhaps later unearthed as relics of a bygone era.
